The short version: Normal SEO is the entry ticket: get indexed, allow snippets, answer the question well.

What they studied

Google's documentation on how AI Overviews and AI Mode choose and show web pages, and what site owners can control.

Key findings

  • Google says there are no extra requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
  • Both features may run several related searches ("query fan-out") and so can link to a wider set of pages than classic results.
  • Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console under the Web search type.
  • Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend more time on the site.
  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex control what can be shown.

Key learnings

  • Normal SEO is the entry ticket: get indexed, allow snippets, answer the question well.
  • Cover the subtopics around a question, because fan-out searches look for them.
  • Use data-nosnippet on text you never want quoted, rather than blocking the whole page.

Things to keep in mind

  • This is Google describing its own product. Independent studies (Pew, Seer, Ahrefs) find lower click-through rates when AI Overviews appear; Google's "higher quality clicks" claim is about click quality, not volume.
  • Search Console does not split out AI feature clicks, so you cannot check the claim on your own data.
